INSTALLATION

Just plug it into your Cig. Lighter. Expander Plugs, to accommodate two or three devices into your Cig plug are available at all Auto supply stores. If you do NOT want to plug AvTek's unit into your Cig plug all the time. Then please make an effort to plug it in occasionally, and you MUST also recharge using 110v A/c. Our Battery Manufacture claims very little discharge will occur (2%) per month. However, if you follow our recharge recommendations in this Manual, you should get 5 to 7 years or more before replacement batteries should be considered. If you do NOT recharge, your batteries will sulfate to a premature death.  *Note, see tips for fast Re-Charge (28 volt) only.

OPERATIONAL, and 1st TIME USE:

All unit's may NOT be fully Charged when shipped. Please charge before use, using the 110v A/c adapter. So…

With the Master Switch turned OFF and all Avionics instruments, lights, any Electrical equipment turned OFF. You may then turn on AvTek's StdBy unit. The RED Led, above the ON/OFF switch will come on steady and your turn bank coordinator will begin to SPOOL-Up, just like it does when you 1st turn-on your Master Switch.

The amount of equipment you will be able to power for 45min. to One Hour or more will vary from aircraft to aircraft. However, you should be able to power some or all of the following: Turn/Bank, #1 Nav/Comm/glide-slope/w Localizer, GPS, or DME, Outer-Marker. Also as a Bonus the pitot heater can be used, however any combination may over power the unit. Should the consumption exceed 10 amps the breaker in the rear, (back door) will POP. This Aircraft Breaker, and AvTek's circuit board inside works together to safely delivery enough POWER to operate your IFR Elec. instruments for at least 45 minuets. Many of AvTek's customers have reported over one hour. Each Aircraft has different packages, so your results may vary. Using the X-ponder is NOT recommended. Power consumption is HIGH. If you had a total Elect. Failure and did not own AvTek's unit your X-ponder would not operate anyway. Therefore, PLEASE do a test on the ground of which equipment AvTek can operate on your aircraft. Then with a Safety Pilot on Board, do a flight test similar to your ground test, remember to leave your MASTER Switch TURNED OFF to simulate a total electrical failure. ONLY do this on a VFR day. When you have accomplished these tests, PLEASE tape a Checklist to the side of AvTek's unit describing what equipment can be operated in your aircraft. NEVER leave the unit Turned-ON when not in use. Recharge is always done with the ON/OFF switch in the OFF position.

RECHARGE: 12 volt

Note: Blinking Red Led on the "Left Side" is only used on the 12 volt unit.  28 Volt unit has a Green Led as the "Charger" Led and it does not Blink.  The On/Off  Led on both units is RED.

The RED Led will "Blink" when the unit is FULLY charged. Recharge time from 110v A/c will vary between 8 hr. to 24 hrs. You can also recharge from your Aircraft/Auto Cig lighter. When you are recharging from any 12-volt Cig lighter always plug the inter-connecting MALE ends into the "INPUT" side, NOT the "OUTPUT" side. Please note: When fully charged, the Red "Blinking" LED (on the left-side) will ONLY occur when using 110v A/c. The Red Led may "blink" when charging from your aircraft, but do not expect it. The Charging Led will be on steady, indicating some charge from your 12-volt Cig lighter.

Recharge 28 volt

Look in the back door for the 110v A/c cord.  Plug it into any outlet.  The GREEN Led on the left is the charge status.  Bright Green means it's taking Maximum Charge. The Led will become less & less bright as the Lead-Acid Batteries near FULL charge.  The Green Led will go out when fully charged.   However, the Led may appear OUT, when in-fact it's still Dimly lit.  So always extend the charge time 3 to 5 hours after you believe the Led is OUT.  *Note.   Fast charge with the 110v A/c cord, can be done leave the On/Off switch "ON".   This will eliminate the final stage regulator, (three Stage Regulator) for a faster charge. "CAUTION" when charging with the switch "ON" the green the Led goes OUT, and does not work as a charge status indicator.  So, after hours (over-nite) turn the switch OFF while still plugged in to see the Charge Status.   NEVER, NEVER charge from your aircraft Lighter with the On/Off Switch "ON" 12 volt or 28 volt!  The red Led on the right side is there to remind you that: The unit is either ON, or still plugged into POWER.  Please do not leave it plugged into 110v A/c all the time.

In-Flight ELECTRICAL FAILURES:

Many of AvTek's customers have reported that they had no early warning detection (Please see 1st_Alert. ) of their charging system failing. So please keep your AvTek unit at easy arms reach away or always plugged in to your Cig lighter. The baggage compartment is NOT the best location for this unit.

So, when you have an In-Flight electrical failure, TURN-OFF YOUR MASTER SWITCH 1st . You do not want to back-feed power to your ships dead battery. Also TURN-OFF all Electrical Switches. You could have your mechanic install a "StdBy Elect. Switch". So when this switch is thrown all Non-essential electrical equipment is turned OFF, and all the IFR Elec Instruments you want will be turned-on by AvTek. Should you over power, the aircraft FAA-PMA approved circuit breaker in the rear will POP. YOU MUST REMEMBER THIS. So, should all-of-a sudden your panel goes dead with AvTek powering it. Look in the back door, the BREAKER has POPPED. The 12 Volt unit (only) has an "Alert" Feature. The Red Charging Led will also begin to BLINK again when there is 3 to 5 minuets of power left. I hope you are on the ground and taxiing, should you ever see it blink.  I would not want to be on the Glide-Slope when it started the "Blinking 3 min.Warning".  At least you'd  know what is coming shortly.  When you have a Total Elect Failure; AvTek recommends: Descending to the nearest Air Field, rather-then continuing on to your final destination.  A new fully charged AvTek unit can go the "distance" up to 86 minuets, before the Red Led will Blink, indicating 3 minuets are left.  I want you to Land Safely and Taxiing to the Tie-Down.

Many customers have reported that AvTek's unit lowered the Gear on their aircraft. AvTek MAKES NO CLAIM as to this capability. However we suggest trying this, again on a VFR day at cruise Altitude, with the Master Switch OFF.

Why is the TWIN Male cigarette plug cord so SHORT?

As Scotty said to Capt. Kirk; "I can't change the Laws of Physics".

Well as an Engineer I do appreciate that Statement, here's why:   I2*R= Power or line drop.  The amount of lost power is directly proportional to the amount (or) length of line cord.   In this case: It's the interconnecting Twin Male Cigarette cord.  So to maximize the amount of energy being transferred from AvTek's unit to your your Dead panel, I must make the cord as long, or "Short" as needed; without being too short.   For an example: 5" would be great to me as the Engineer, but to you that 5" cord would be worthless.  The cord length is a balance of Physics and practicality.  With this understood and accepted; you may use an 12 volt   extension cord sold at "Radio Shack" for RE-Charging ONLY.  NEVER use anything other then AvTek's cord to power your Panel.   So DO NOT lengthen AvTek's cord. Call me if this is confusing.

To Start your Engine.

Plug the output into your Airplanes Cigarette light.  Master Switch ON, Everything else OFF, and I mean EVERYTHING else OFF.  Then turn ON AvTek's unit.   Power will discharge into your airplanes DEAD battery.  If the battery is really dead wait 20 to 30 minuets.  Otherwise 5 to 10 minuets may be all it takes.   NEVER, NEVER try to start your engine with AvTek unit still plugged into your cigarette lighter.  Always unplug AvTek prior to hitting the STARTER.  Then when your airplane engine starts-up, plug your AvTek unit back into the Cig lighter to charge-it back-up.  I have had many successful reports from many different aircraft types.  I hope it works for you should you ever need it.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING:

AvTek's 12v and 28v Units, use CASES that ARE IMPORTED.

AvTek uses the enclosure cases that were manufactured by another company in China (Recoton), which DISCONTINUED their product. Some markings and functions on the cases are NOT used with AvTek's design. It was far to Cost Prohibited for AvTek to manufacture the enclosure box, when this one does just fine. I own the rights to the entire discontinued product, therefore supplies are LIMITED. So when all the units are sold, this product will NEVER be available again. All internal components and circuit boards are the sole design and property of AvTek. Made in the USA, Kent Washington.

The Switch on the left side when facing the unit, near the Charging LED is NOT USED with AvTek's MODEL. It is DISCONNECTED, do not worry about it. It does NOTHING, really. Please call me if YOU do NOT understand. It was used with "Recoton's" product. If you do call, I will tell you the SWITCH DOES NOTHING, so you may leave it in any position. The SMALL input on the SIDE is the "CHARGER" input. This is where you plug in the 110v A/c Wall adapter. The input plug on the other side (Left) 3-6-9 volt is NOT USED. It is Disconnected, Please do not be concerned about it.

WARRANTY:

5 to 7 years are the life expectancy of these 12-volt batteries. The Battery has a 90-day warranty. One year warranty on the circuit.

The length of the Cigarette plug is ~35". Why is it so short? I2R is the formula. Meaning: Power Loss. I needed to provide the Maximum transfer of power that’s available. Please do not Lengthen or use any other cord. You may use a longer cord for recharge from the Cig plug. But NOT discharge into the longer extended cord.     e-mail: avtek21@home.com
